Inside the book

  • The whole crew walking home together along a path at sunset. Text: Home they all walked as the day went west. A shiver, a drip. They could not yet rest.
  • Toby the dalmatian and a golden puppy trotting among tall bluebells. Text: Toby bounced in and he led the race. Stella walked on and she slowed the pace.
  • Archie the border collie puppy standing beside a stream among bluebells. Text: Archie looked left and he would not rush in. Toby grinned back and he started to spin.
  • A golden puppy leaping down the bank towards Toby, who is slipping at the edge of the river. Text: She saw him slip at the river drop. She ran and she ran and she never did stop.
  • The rescue: a golden puppy pulling Toby out of the river by his neckerchief. Text: She pulled and she pulled and she held on tight. It pulled and it pulled with a snap and a bite.
  • Four puppies lined up beside a stream. Text: “Wait!” cried the Crew. “Pause, look, then go! Think of the water. Take it slow!”
  • Four happy puppies gathered close together as water droplets fly. Text: They gave a cheer and they gathered round. All of the Crew stood on dry ground.
  • The crew huddled close together on the grass among bluebells after the rescue. Text: He dripped and he shook and he hung his head. The Crew sat close on the grass instead.
  • The crew racing along a misty forest track beside the water. Text: They bounce and they race in the morning sun. They pass by the water and off they run.
  • Final page: Toby the dalmatian and a golden puppy by a wooden bridge over a stream. Text: Pause, look, then go. Think of the water. Take it slow.
